How to get your business into the top 3 on Google Maps

A step-by-step guide for local businesses: set up your Google Business Profile properly, get reviews and show up when people nearby search.

Why the map matters more than your website ranking

When someone searches for a local service, like "electrician Ballina" or "cleaner Lennox Head", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Those three get a large share of the calls. Getting into that group comes down mostly to your free Google Business Profile, not your website alone.

Google says local results depend on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). You can't move your business closer to everyone, but you can work on the other two.

1. Claim and complete your profile

Go to Google Business Profile, search for your business, and claim it. If it doesn't exist, create it. Google will ask you to verify that you're the owner, usually by phone, email or video.

Then fill in every field. Incomplete profiles look less trustworthy to customers and give Google less to match against searches.

  • Business name: your real name only. Adding keywords like "Best Plumber Ballina" breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
  • Primary category: the most specific one that fits, such as "Plumber" rather than "Contractor". This is one of the strongest signals you control.
  • Service area: if you go to customers, hide your home address and list the towns you actually cover.
  • Hours, phone and website: accurate and the same as on your website.
  • Services and description: describe what you do in plain words, including the jobs people search for.

2. Get reviews, steadily

Reviews are the biggest part of "prominence" you can influence. Google looks at how many reviews you have, how good they are and how recent they are. A business that gets a couple of new reviews every month usually beats one that got thirty reviews three years ago and nothing since.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally the same day. In your profile, use "Ask for reviews" to get a short link you can text.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad. It shows future customers you care.
  • Never pay for reviews or write your own. It's against Google's rules and Australian consumer law.

3. Add real photos

Upload photos of your work, your van or shopfront, and your team. Real photos make customers more likely to call, and they show Google the profile is active. Add a few new ones every month.

4. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number and website should be identical on your Google profile, your website, Facebook and directories like Yellow Pages, True Local, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places. Mismatched details make it harder for Google to trust that they're all the same business.

5. Make your website back it up

Your Google profile links to your website, and Google uses both. A good local website helps by:

  • naming the towns you cover, in plain words, on a page Google can read
  • loading quickly on a phone, since most local searches happen on mobile
  • making your phone number tap-to-call, so the visit turns into a job
  • showing the same business name, phone and service area as your profile.

6. Post updates

Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers and photos. Regular posts keep your profile looking active and give customers a reason to choose you. Once a week is plenty: a finished job, a seasonal tip, or an offer.

How long does it take?

A new profile can start showing up within weeks, but climbing into the top three for competitive searches usually takes a few months of steady reviews and updates. The good news for Northern Rivers businesses is that many competitors haven't done the basics, so a complete, active profile often stands out quickly.
